Le Grand Plessis
Le Grand Plessis
The history of the Grand Plessis goes back to 1050 when this piece of land was given to the Abbey of Bourgueil by two brothers. From that date, till the Revolution, it was an outpost for the Abbey; housing a small community of monks (until the revolution it was known as Plessis les Moines) for which the chapel and dormitories still survive. The monks collected tithed crops from the villagers of Chouzé-sur-Loire in its magnificent tithe barn; received notables of the commune; and dispensed justice in the Logis de Prior - still there today, with renaissance menaud window, original wattle and daub walls, and stone chimney piece. At some point, probably during the troubled 13th or 14th centuries, when this part of France was overrun by the English, the moat was dug, and slit openings for defensive action were installed. Evidence of a fish pond (for Fridays), a dovecote, and beehives have been discovered during restoration.

Le Grand Plessis
The property has two parts, the Priory, with one en-suite double, another double and twin with shared bathroom, a further bathroom and a small double in the tower. There is a spectacular salon/kitchin/dining room 14 metres long with a minstrel's gallery and medieval stone fireplace. The Chapel is next door. The new kitchen is of the highest standard. The Monk's House has six bedrooms, all doubles of twins, and three bathrooms, a separate salon and dining/kitchen area.

Linen is provided, as is a cleaning service during and at the end of your holiday, and a babysitting service. Cots and highchairs provided on request.

Both or either of these properties can be rented; together they sleep up to 20 people. Each has a separate outdoor dining area.

The closed courtyard has a wendy house for children, and a sitting area. There are teak loungers and a table for outdoor eating. The property is reached by its own tree-lined road and is completely private. Covered parking for 3 cars is available.
The private courtyard is ideal for large parties - we recently had a very successful medieval banquet with a spit roast and Italian tenor as
entertainment! Nearby there are winetastings, chateaux, the towns of Bourgueil, Tours, and Samur to explore, restaurants, canoeing on the Loire (2km), riding, tennis, sailing, fishing, biking .... the list goes on and on.
